Recycling

The majority of the components of a ship which has passed out of commission are recyclable. Every year about 1,000 ships are recycled.

Most of the recycling plants are located in Asia where the environmental focus is not as noticeable as it is in Europe. The Danish Shipowners’ Association finds it unacceptable when ships are recycled without sufficient consideration to the environment or working conditions.

That is why we work in favour of stricter rules in regards to the recycling of ships on a global scale. Denmark and other seafaring nations should ratify the global Hong Kong Convention a soon as possible.

Please find more information on the recycling of ships in our Policy Paper below.
